Stumbling across history…

It comes with no surprise sometimes that searching for one thing leads to many, many other things.

I have a monthly task of searching eBay for old yearbooks. I’ve done this so regularly that I’ve been somewhat successful at finding really rare items. I’ve even come across my old Elementary School yearbooks and some High School ones as well.

Recently I was showing my 6 year old 1st grader a picture of me as a 2nd grader, as I acquired and received a pair of yearbooks back in 2021 during the COVID pandemic. After having her guess whom I was (she picked correctly), I remembered that there was a teacher that “travelled” with the entire class through grades and decided to do some initial searching. Lo and behold I would come across virginiaroom.org and the (unsecured) Virginia Room Digital Collection.

The Digital Collection represents an amazing look back through the Roanoke County Public Libraries, including the Wise Owl Collection which happens to be the Yearbooks of my Elementary School.

I was really ecstatic to find these, and finally have the best black-and-white digital photos of my young smile.
